NCBI Switzerland: Low-Threshold Support for Traumatized Refugees

Since the end of 2020 NCBI, together with the Competence Centre for Mental Health, Trauma and Migration, has been supporting refugees experiencing psychological distress and trauma. By combining psychotherapeutic treatment with targeted social integration, the programme provides effective and sustainable support.

Bridge Builders and Trauma

Specially trained "bridge builders" are a key component of the project. These are successfully integrated refugees who support clients in their native language. They help foster orientation and motivation, facilitate access to essential resources and strengthen clients' ability to manage everyday life independently. At the same time, their involvement reduces the workload of therapists and existing support services.

The project is based on an innovative, interdisciplinary collaboration between psychiatry and social integration. This hybrid-funded cooperative model reduces post-migratory stressors, promotes psychological stabilization and strengthens refugees’ participation in society.

As a result, participants gain access not only to psychotherapy but also to culturally sensitive and linguistically appropriate support that fosters their integration and capacity for self-management in the long term.
