Biber the Kid: Theatre at Pro Natura Centre Eichholz

Thanks to the Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation, 15 school classes from the Bern region attended an open-air theatre about beavers in May 2021. The project was part of the tenth anniversary of the Nature Centre by the Aare in Wabern and delighted over 300 children and their accompanying adults.

Theatre and puppet show with a difference: unusually, the stage is outside in the arena of the Pro Natura Centre Eichholz, right next to the ponds where the beavers cavort at night. Beaver the Kid is a humorous play for children and families, about a cheeky but lovable beaver. The play makes you think about why it is so difficult for humans and beavers to live together in some places in Switzerland.

The action in brief: An evil desperado is up to mischief! Farmer Krummenacher's maize field is plundered and flooded. Enough! “Beaver the Kid” must be caught or killed! But the cheeky rodent is quite clever! He can also count on the help of the two committed naturalists Rahel and Giusi.

The project was a complete success for everyone involved: for the children it was great to experience theatre directly in the beaver’s territory, the actors benefited from playing in front of an enthusiastic audience again after a long dry spell, and for our centre it was a unique opportunity to present our regular audience with a great present for our anniversary.

We leave you with a quote from a second grade teacher, representative for the positive feedback we received from the schools: “Just fantastic, we spent the entire time amazed and laughing! The play was funny and colourful, the performances were great and the music complemented it perfectly! There were jokes for both adults and kids, a good mixture of levels – and with all of this it even taught us about beavers! It truly captivated the children and us ;)”
