The Stanley Thomas Johnson Foundation welcomes applications in the field of professional contemporary theatre. The proposal must fulfil some of the following criteria:

We support projects which

  • are innovative, extraordinary or experimental
  • offer cultural and artistic exchange
  • link to other activities of the Johnson Foundation (bridge projects):
    • music, dance and visual arts
    • assisting individuals affected by conflicts and violence
    • scientific research particularly in health and well-being
    • providing access to vocational training and education
  • are start-up projects for British and Swiss groups of artists
  • include educational activities
  • integrate people with special needs and improve their access to the arts

Recipients include

  • professional independent Swiss or British theatre companies that attract attention beyond their region
  • children’s and youth theatre
  • puppet theatre and object theatre
  • performances by Swiss or British companies in Switzerland, the UK or in our focus regions (currently Ethiopia, Mali, Nigeria, Pakistan, Somalia, Afghanistan, Angola, Central African Republic, Chad, Myanmar, Yemen)
  • Swiss guest appearances at British theatre festivals
  • British guest appearances at Swiss theatre festivals
  • extraordinary projects in the seasonal plan of institutions

Applications must include

  • completed application form (see documents and downloads)
  • a clear project description, max. 6000 characters, including reasons why the project may be considered extraordinary and why it should be supported by the Foundation (max. 1000 of the available 6000 characters)
  • budget and funding details
  • confirmed performances at several venues / locations
The application has to be sent per e-mail.

We do not award grants to

  • exclusively commercial projects
  • individual artists
  • repeat productions
  • spoken word performances
  • circuses and magic shows
  • comedy
  • musicals
  • anniversary celebrations, prizes, competitions
  • amateur performances (even those working with a professional director)
  • requests for funding infrastructure and running costs
  • seasonal programming for theatres
  • film productions
  • book projects 
  • support for authors
